The Propel Device Concept

CentiPoised is developing innovative drug delivery devices powered by liquefied gas.

The CentiPoised Propel concept offers a powerful solution for pharmaceutical companies requiring high delivery forces to enable delivery of viscous formulations, through small needles, in acceptable delivery times.

The Propel-2000G is configured for a 2.25mL Glass Pre-filled Syringe. The demonstrator device uses an 18mm amplification chamber to scale up the pressure provided by the liquefied gas power source. Viscosities up to around 400cP can be delivered in less than 15 seconds through a 27Gx1/2" Needle.

Real world test results agree well with the theoretical thermodynamic model.  By increasing or decreasing the size of amplification chamber, the platform may be adapted to suite a range of drug delivery needs.

Propel Capabilities

The Propel Platform is compatible with a wide range of glass staked needle and plastic luer lock syringes, from 0.5ml to 2.25ml. We are currently generating data for the following primary container and needle configurations:

  • Propel-2000G: 2.25ml Glass Syringe + 27G 1/2" Needle

  • Propel-1000: 1.0mL Long Polymer Syringe + 25G 5/8" Needle

  • Propel-500: 0.5mL Polymer Syringe + 25G 5/8" Needle

The Propel-1000 is configured for a 1.0mL Long Polymer Syringe. The Propel platform is easily adapted to different syringe sizes, with minimal change parts. The power pack and most parts are universal across all syringe configurations.

The Propel-1000 demonstrator also uses an 18mm amplification chamber.  Due to the smaller Syringe diameter, effective delivery forces are higher and Viscosities up to around 1000cP can be delivered in less than 10 seconds through a 25Gx5/8" Needle.

The Propel-500 is configured for a 0.5mL Polymer Syringe. The even smaller Syringe diameter results in still higher effective delivery forces. Viscosities up to around 5000cP can be delivered in less than 10 seconds through a 25Gx5/8" Needle.

At higher viscosities, the test results diverge slightly from the basic delivery model, which assumes Newtonian fluids.  This is expected behaviour due to shear thinning of the Silicon Oil at high shear rates.  Non-Newtonian fluid models may be used if required for a particular drug product.
